Annual Commemorative Festival
The CAPTAIN COOK 1770 FESTIVAL has been an annual event for seventeen years, commemorating the visit of the Endeavour and the landing of Lt. James Cook and his party on the 21-22 May 2011 at the town of Seventeen Seventy, as it is now known. This was the first landing for Cook and his crew in Queensland.
*********Winner of the Best Job In The World Ben Southall will embark on The Best Expedition in the World next year, exploring the Great Barrier Reef. Starting from the captain cook 1770 festival !*********The CAPTAIN COOK 1770 FESTIVAL begins with the premiere opening, Thursday night, of the Film Festival with 'In the Bin' hosting this year's event. The Art Exhibition opens on Friday evening with a gala presentation of this year's entrants from all over the country.. This is a professionally run event and has become a popular platform for local and interstate artists to showcase their works. The Art Exhibition runs for the entre weekend. Saturday is the main festival day with live entertainment throughout the day until 10.30pm. A special feature of the evening is a spectacular 20 minute fireworks display showering over the bay, sponsored by Ergon Energy. While the festival concentrates on the fun aspect, the festival committee is cognisant of the fact that many Australians have no knowledge of the historical significance of Cook’s landing in Seventeen Seventy. The Committee wishes to promote and educate visitors of the indigenous history of the area. The Gooreng Gooreng people are the traditional owners and on the morning of the main festival activities, the Gooreng Gooreng people explain the dreamtime stories of the area and perform traditional dances to the sound of didgeridoos. There is also a re-enactment of Cook’s landing with professional actors and period costumes. Families are a major consideration and on the Sunday we host a Family Fun Day for children. The CAPTAIN COOK 1770 FESTIVAL is well on the way to being a major event on Queensland’s tourism calendar. Website

'THE BEST EXPEDITION IN THE WORLD' Winner of the Best Job In The World Ben Southall will embark on The Best Expedition in the World next year, exploring the Great Barrier Reef. Following his job as ‘Island Caretaker’ on Hamilton Island in the Whitsundays, Southall will kayak and sail 1,600km from the Town of 1770 on the central Queensland coast north to Cooktown in May 2011( a three month kayak and sailing journey).
The launch will coincide with the Captain Cook 1770 festival. Southall said he will be documenting his experiences through www.islandreefjob.com and hopes to provide live-streaming from his trip which can be watched online. “I feel privileged to have had so many wonderful interactions with the natural world whilst out on the Great Barrier Reef and I’d like to encourage more people to share in the same experiences,” he said. Southall was one of 16 finalists narrowed down from over 34,000 job applicants who submitted a 60-second video for the position.
